How to stack savings without breaking the rules

Published 2026-09-13 · BuyTCN Deals editorial

Most stores allow several savings mechanisms at once, but almost none allow all of them. Understanding the order they apply in is the difference between a clever stack and a cancelled order.

Stacking means combining more than one form of saving on a single purchase. Done correctly it is entirely legitimate. Done carelessly it can void your cashback or get an order cancelled. The rules differ by retailer, so always read them — but the general principles are consistent.

The usual order of application

Savings generally apply in this sequence:

  1. Item price reductions — a sale price or a bundle offer.
  2. Store coupons or promo codes applied at checkout.
  3. Loyalty points or store credit redeemed against the balance.
  4. Gift cards used as a payment method.
  5. Cashback paid separately, after the purchase.

Because cashback is calculated last — and usually on the amount actually paid — redeeming a gift card or store credit often reduces your cashback. Sometimes the coupon is worth more, sometimes the cashback is. Run both numbers.

Where stacking usually breaks

A reliable workflow

  1. Find the item and note the exact model number.
  2. Check whether the retailer's own loyalty scheme gives a better return than cashback for this category.
  3. Look for a store-issued coupon first — it is more likely to be compatible.
  4. Click through your chosen cashback route as the very last step before checking out.
  5. Do not apply an unrelated code at the payment page if you are relying on cashback.
  6. Keep a note of the order number and the expected cashback amount.

A word on expectations

Cashback is paid after the retailer confirms the order, often weeks later, and it can be declined. Treat it as a bonus rather than the reason for a purchase, and never buy something you would not otherwise buy just to earn it.
