How to track a price so you know when a sale is real

Price tracking turns a guessing game into a decision. This is how these tools work, where they fall short, and a simple routine for using them.

A discount percentage tells you almost nothing on its own. A price history tells you whether the current price is genuinely low. That is the entire value of price tracking, and it is a large part of why we do not publish prices on this site.

What a price tracker does

Most trackers record the price of a product page at regular intervals and chart it over time. Some cover many retailers; others specialise in one marketplace. They typically offer alerts when a price falls below a threshold you set.

What they cannot tell you

• Whether the product is any good. A low price on a bad product is still a bad purchase.
• Whether the seller is authorised. Trackers follow listings, and listings change hands.
• Whether the version is identical. If the model number differs, the price history does not apply.
• Whether it will fall further. History is not a forecast, especially at the end of a product's life.

How to set a target price

Rather than chasing the lowest figure ever recorded, pick a number you would be genuinely happy to pay. This is easier than it sounds:

1. Look at the price history and note the typical low point.
2. Look at the typical high point.
3. Choose a figure in the lower part of that range that still feels fair.
4. Set your alert at that number and then stop checking.

The advantage of this approach is that it removes the temptation to buy something just because it is discounted.

When to ignore the tracker entirely

If you need the item by a specific date, or if it is the last one available in a size or colour you want, the deadline matters more than the price. Set the alert and buy when you need to, not when the chart looks prettiest.

One caution about alerts

Price alerts create the same urgency they are designed to avoid. Getting a notification is not a reason to buy. Treat it as information, then apply the same checks you would apply to any purchase.
