Buying kitchen appliances on sale: a checklist

Appliances are a category where the wrong purchase is expensive to undo. These checks cover the things that most often cause regret.

Kitchen appliances are bulky, heavy and usually non-returnable once used. A discount is only worthwhile if the appliance actually fits your kitchen and your habits.

1. Measure the space, not the appliance

Manufacturers quote exterior dimensions, but you also need clearance for ventilation, door swing and access to the plug. Measure the gap, then check the appliance's dimensions including handles and hinges against it.

2. Check the power supply

High-draw appliances may need a dedicated circuit. If you are buying across regions, confirm voltage and plug type — some appliances genuinely cannot be used on a different supply, and converters are not a safe substitute for high-power heating elements.

3. Match the capacity to your actual household

Oversized appliances cost more to buy and more to run. Undersized ones get used twice as often. Be realistic about how many people you are cooking for and how often.

4. Look at consumables and accessories

Filters, bags, blades, gaskets and proprietary capsules are where the long-term cost sits. Check that replacements are available in your country and at a reasonable price before buying.

5. Noise level, if it matters

For anything that runs while you are in the room — extractors, blenders, dishwashers — the decibel rating is worth checking. It is easy to overlook and hard to live with.

6. Energy and water ratings

Where a rating scheme exists in your market, compare it. The running cost over several years frequently exceeds the difference in purchase price, so a cheaper appliance can be the more expensive choice.

7. Warranty length and what it covers

Appliance warranties vary considerably, and some exclude parts that commonly fail. Check the duration for the motor or compressor specifically, not just the headline figure.

8. Delivery, installation and old-unit removal

Large appliances often need more than a standard delivery. Confirm whether installation and removal of the old unit are included, and whether anyone will need to be home.

9. Returns if it does not fit

Once an appliance has been installed or used, return rights often narrow sharply. That makes the measuring step more important than the discount.
