A 7-point checklist before you buy on sale

Discounts create urgency, and urgency is the enemy of careful decisions. This checklist takes two minutes and catches most of the mistakes people regret.

The moment a price drops is exactly when people are most likely to skip the checks they would normally do. Here is a short list worth running through every time.

1. Do I actually want this, at full attention?

Cover the price and the discount. Would you still want the item? A discount on something you did not need is a cost, not a saving.

2. Is the seller the brand, an authorised retailer, or a marketplace listing?

This determines your warranty, your returns rights and often whether the product is genuine. Marketplace listings from third-party sellers can look identical to the brand's own listing and behave very differently.

3. What does the warranty actually cover, and for how long?

Warranty terms differ by region. A product bought from one country's store may not be serviceable in another. If you are buying across borders, check this before, not after.

4. What is the returns window, and who pays return shipping?

A generous returns policy is worth paying slightly more for, especially for anything sized, fitted or electrical.

5. Is the price genuinely low for this model?

Check a price-history tracker, or at least compare the same model number across a few sellers. Ignore the percentage shown on the page.

6. What arrives in the box?

Sale bundles sometimes drop accessories, shorten the cable, or exclude a subscription that was previously included. Confirm what is in the box before assuming it matches an older listing.

7. What is the total, delivered?

Add shipping, tax, and any import charges. For cross-border purchases, duties can change the maths completely.

And one thing to do immediately after

Keep the order confirmation and the product page. Screenshots of the listing — including the stated returns terms — are useful if anything goes wrong later. They cost nothing to save and solve most disputes.
